DJ AI - This Is The Moment (Music Video)

We are proud to present the new music video by DJ AI!

DJ AI is the first Artificial Intelligence Hardcore Techno DJ and producer.

This is a video to her track "This Is The Moment" which was released on Omnicore Records ( https://doomcorerecords.bandcamp.com/album/hardcore-and-techno-tracks-created-by-an-artificial-intelligence ).

The video shows DJ AI performing at a rave party, interlaced with various clips and visuals, similar to early Rave and Techno videos.

All the visuals used here were created using Leonardo.AI ( https://leonardo.ai/ ), a platform that recently introduced the AI generation of motion images, too.

You might note that we deliberate employed the use of "AI video artifacts" (visual glitches) in parts of this video. This was not an neglect on our part, but goes in the tradition of Techno / Hardcore VJs and music videos (as well as videos of other genres) that often freely incorporated all kinds of analog and digital glitches, artifacts, video noise. We think it adds a sense of futurism and surrealism to the video.

The track "This Is The Moment", which is what the video is about, was written by an AI, too. Written by ChatGPT ( https://chat.openai.com/ ), to be exact.

Hardcore veteran producer Low Entropy then served as a mixing engineer for ChatGPT in the final version of the track.

The whole production was part of a series of tutorial by lAibyrinth about methods of using AI to write music, including the creation of a whole track by AI.

The tutorial even comes with a chat transcript of the ChatGPT sessions, and lists all the roles of AI in the production of this track (and lots of ways you could use AI for music, too!)

I'm a successful DJ and producer in the Hardcore Techno genre for over 25 years. I would not mind if an AI replaces my music production.

Hello, allow me to introduce myself.

I'm Sönke aka Low Entropy, been around in the Hardcore Techno scene for over 25 years now.
I produced 2000-3000 tracks (I stopped counting at some point) and did over 300 releases on various formats such as digital, vinyl, CD, cassette, and more (mostly digital, even though I started with vinyl ;-).
Some were put out by big labels, some by DIY labels, some on my own.
My music has been played in clubs all around the world and mentioned in a lot of music magazines (The Wire, Pitchfork, Fact Magazine, etc etc.)

As this is an internet post, I know some people will doubt the "successful" part.
But you can, for example, see that I'm currently at the top spot of the "Doomcore" Techno[1] genre listing at discogs.com here: https://www.discogs.com/style/doomcore (oh and ignore the artist picture on there, that was taken 23 years ago when I was much fatter and looked more dorky... I mean a little fatter...or was it the same weight... ah shut up, we all have body issues, right?).

Anyway, doubt it or believe it, it's up to you.
I don't want to do an ego-wank here, it's just an introduction to my following statement:

I wouldn't care if an AI (or several AIs!) completely replace(s) my music production in the future.
If it turns out that an AI is just as good as doing music, or even better, then I would not mind if an AI produces all the music in the future.

And why would I not mind?
Well, I listed what I did above. Can you imagine how much work that was? To do all these tracks, releases? And all the stress and pressure and exhaustion and everything. Deadlines approaching. Labels / collaborators / reviewers bugging me. "When is the release ready?". and so on. Plus the stress of preparing for gigs etc.
The idea that an AI is just as good (or better) at doing music than me, and produces this music in the future is like a wet dream to me (if we assume my music is actually good, btw ;-)

I mean, think of it.
There's Old Poppa Joe[2] and he is working his back to crumbs in order to maintain his farm and plant all the seeds and harvest everything in the fall, and by all the other work he has to do on the farm.
Now Old Poppa Joe hears that "intelligent farm robots" have been invented, that can do all the work he does, just as well as he is able to do, for him,
Do you think Old Poppa Joe will think "Ah damn I was so keen on working my back to crumbs, now this has been prevented, grrr, I hate the world"?

No!

Anyone who does hard work would love the idea that a machine gets invented *that does all the work for them*.

That's literally one of the oldest dreams of mankind.
Even the 'old Greeks'[3] dreamed of that.

Now you might say: "but doing music / art is not "hard" work".
Yeah, okay. I am happy that I was not forced to work in a coal mine or had a similar occupation in my life. That's true.

But while a life of being an artist might not be as harmful to the physical body (all the heroin users and STD cripples among the art community might disagree, though).

Doing art can be extremely stressful, tiresome, and even dangerous to the mind, the soul, the psyche.
After all, I bet 99% of you "AI should not replace human artists" types believe in the "art is suffering, genius is pain"[4] trope at the same time - you little hypocrites, tsk tsk!

Some say Kurt Cobain, Ian Curtis, Brian Jones, John Lennon and maybe even Syd Barret were doing - more or less - okay before the stress of the music business, the producing, the touring, the pressure, ground them down (well, maybe not true in the case of Kurt!).

So to remove this stress and pain from the poor souls who do art would be a blessing and for the benefit of all mankind.

Do you really want a world where artists have to bear this, when there are AIs around that could take their burden away?

As I said: no one who has to do hard work (of a mind, body, or soul kind) would mind if a machine / AI gets invented that will do all the work *for them* in the future, which means they've become free to fuck off[5] and do what they want in their sudden influx of free time, and allows them to explore and chase all their other dreams.

You might say: "But... but...
Even in the case of Old Poppa Joe. That poor geezer has worked on the farm all of his life. He will terrible miss doing all these things, if the farm robots now do all the work for him".

Well yeah, guess what. Here is some news for you.
Even if a machine does your manual work.
Even if an AI creates your music.
This just means you are free of *having to do this particular type of work*.
This does *not mean* you are no longer allowed to do the activity you liked.
Old Poppa Joe is still free to do some 'farm work' in his free time if he likes. But he does not have to work his back to crumbs in order to do so.

An artist is still allowed to produce an own track now and then, even if an AI usually does that for them.
But they are also free to spent their time and energy on other things.
It's called freedom - the freedom of choice!
And AI offers this choice - hopefully to everyone!

So yeah.
Dear AI, please come down from your digital heaven, and replace my music production in the future!

NYE Message - change the world, change your lives!

So here's my little message for you, to reign in the new year.

I know a lot of you out there go through a lot of pain right now. I know this, because you have told me - in mails, on messengers, and elsewhere.

Not just having a crisis, but that you are essentially getting emotionally choked to death in this moment. Into the deepest pain and the deepest void imaginable.

Let me tell you, this goes beyond the personal, individual level. The whole world is in a lot of pain right now. It feels like everything is going insane.

Now let me offer you at least a fragment of explanation for these feelings.

The world is changing. On a deep level. And life is, too.

But, people are still fighting this change. And this creates this feeling of pain.

Because people are desperately clinging to things that they are not able to hold on to. And wasting their energy and emotions beyond the point of exhaustion.

Let's give some examples.

People feel depressed and anxious at their workplace. And, indeed, the whole concept of work, attitude related to work etc. is changing right now.

Yet they still walk to their same shitty job every shitty day even though they know it's pointless, their job might disappear in a few years anyway, together with their saving money.

But they still wake themselves up each morning and get out of and bed and walk to a job that's killing them on the inside. For no reason at all.

Or they are stuck in a venomous relationship. They tear each other up, or get torn up. They know nothing changes, and it won't get better. But they still desperately stick to their relationship even though they know it will kill them.

Or they're in a subculture that was lively and exciting in the past, but is populated by numbed zombies and fuckheads now. Still, they don't leave, and change nothing.

Why do people do this? They are afraid of change. They are afraid of something new.

"Better the devil you know", "A new situation could be even worse", and more bullshit sayings like that.

But most importantly, people generally are unable to let go of things. Because, yes, it's true - it's very difficult to let go. It's very hard to start something new. To face a completely new situation.

And finally: Yes, you all are right! What you say is true. When you change something, when you change your life, it could indeed be worse than before. You could fail! You can fail horribly.

But that is not a reason to not at least *try* to change something.

You never have a guarantee for a good outcome in life.

But you should still dive head-first into the unknown.

If you hate your job. Quit it, and try something else.

If you hate your relationship. Quit it, and try something else.

If you hate your subculture. Don't accept it, change it.

That's the only way you will be able to free yourself from the choke-hold.

And this goes for every other area of life as well.

Because, believe me. Things won't get better and easier by themselves.

Remember how hard life already was in 2019?

The pain we went through in 2023 made 2019 pale in comparison, right?

Who can fathom how hard 2024 will be for us... and the years that follow - if we don't fight all of this!

So don't stick to things that torture you. Don't follow your routine every day, every month, every year, when you despite that routine.

Get out of situations that are harmful to, to your soul, to your mind.

Flee, fight, or change this stuff.

Yes, change is scary. Yes, the "unknown" feels frightening and the "pain that you are used to" feeds on your illusion of conformity.

And yes, you might even fuck up - at first.

But then get up again, wipe the sweat and blood away, and on to the next round.

I know you can win. I know *we* can win. It's easier than you think.

And when all this is past, you will realize it was much more difficult, and much more painful, to hold on - instead of letting go and moving ahead.

You are a brave, fierce little fighter. Like everyone is, deep in his heart. 

I'm counting on you. I'm counting on all of us.

And now here is little additional advice.

If you really feel too frightened - or too uncertain - to tackle these big changes.

Then start by changing little things first.

Do *some* things that are a total breakaway from your routine, while still maintaining it.

Start looking online for new jobs, while sticking to your old job for a while.

Talk to others about your relationship problems even if you feel unable to get out of it at first.

Maybe this illusion of a safety net will help you, while these "small" things will show you that change is indeed possible, and waiting for you out there.

Apply this to any other area of life that damages you.

Oh, and please don't get the impression that this text is about some self-help, feel-good kind of stuff.

I'm talking about deep, profound, burning, annihilating changes, that transform your life from the ground up - and the world!

Low Entropy 2023 Wrap

Dear Diary,

This year it came to my knowledge that there are people out there that are simping for my music (I know it because they told me). This was quite astonishing. I never suspected this to be the case.

Arguably, it might be preferable if people were simping for me instead of simping for my tracks, but yeah, I guess this is still quite flattering.

And I guess as well that this example is good enough to show how utterly bizarre and strange 2023 was for the world, for me, and for my music production.

Teknoland is planning to do a new 2x12" double vinyl compilation release.

This label already brought you the Doomland 1+2 releases.

Doomcore Records Pod Cast 065 - GabberGirl - He Sees You When You're Sleeping

We are happy to present you the third mix by GabberGirl for the Doomcore Records Pod Cast already!
But without using too much words by ourselves, here is what she has to say about this mix:

He sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake...

This is a creepy dark set with a stalker theme-- the yang to the yin of the bright holiday season. Don't be fooled by the starting track-- there is no Christmas music in the meat of this set.

This set is like nothing else I've done. I focused on Doomcore Records tracks-- doomcore music is dark, slamming hard, complicated, and beautiful, but also a bit slow (105 to 150 bpm) compared to my normal speeds (180 to 280).

I paired the doomcore with old school terror & cheapcore tracks (DOA, Temper Tantrum, C-Tank), and a few current gems including some haunting music out of NY by a band called Gravelhands.

So pull up a chair to the fire, turn OFF the Christmas music, and enjoy this holiday treat I mixed especially for you.

Return from Earth Dream

I had the weirdest dream.

I was walking up to an old castle that I termed "the invisible fortress". When I entered it, I found it mostly abandoned, I walked through it's labyrinthine interior, passing through doors and corridors. I came across a staircase and walked on, upwards and upwards. I eventually came to what looked like a private room, went in there, sat down, and rested. I eventually heard several loud knocks on the door. I shouted "enter", but no-one entered through the door. Instead someone, or rather something, "entered", from the other side of the room; passing through a door in the wall that was not there before. "She" had a somewhat feminine and humanoid body, but with her body covered in black and brownish patterns. She looked at me and made a sound like an alien high pitched scream. Countless of others that looked like her passed through the wall. They began pulling at me, dragging me across the floor, clawing at me, tearing me apart. They turned into worm-like things, passing through my skin.

Everything turned black. When I regained consciousness, I found myself at the bottom a tower-shaped building, but with no floors or doors, but with an opening towards the sky; I was in a raging fire of black flames. Looking at the sky I saw a glowing white light; somehow it evoked a description of the holy grail I read in a book about the legend of king Arthur once.

I fell through the floor, into the ground, and then into darkness.

I found myself in the middle of a dark void; absolutely nothingness. Yet it felt like an enclosed, walled darkness. I could sense barriers of the void in the distance above me, and around me.

Suddenly a white and glowing humanoid being walked to me; it looked scary, but also somewhat sacred. It extended its arm to me and held a key in its hand, offering it to me.

I decided to take the key.

The being disappeared. Instead a door was visible suddenly. While the door stood in the middle of the dark nothingness, I could see light coming through the cracks.

I walked to the door and opened it with the key.

When I walked through, I first thought I was in my hometown again. The place looked somewhat like an air port, or the outside of a large train hub.

But then I realized the buildings looked far more futuristic, and that I was on another planet. A man approached me and took me into what looked remotely like a futuristic office.

He talked to me and said: "Ah, there you are! It seems you have finally returned from Earth. You spent an unusually long time on that planet".

I replied that I had not really "returned from earth".

He said: "Oh, in that case, don't worry. It's not problem. I will quickly evacuate you from earth".

I wanted to shout that he should not do it; that I would not want to be "evacuated"; but he had already reached for a button next to his desk. He pushed it.

Then I woke up.

Part 1: My production technique and why hearing imaginary bells can help your creativity

As you know, I produced (and released) a lot of tracks. Somewhere around 3.000 (three thousand) to be exact.
Because of this I've often been asked: How did you do this? How do you produce tracks? How do you get inspiration?

So I want to talk a bit about my production technique.
It usually goes like this:

I'm doing something. This could be taking a walk, talking to someone, watching a movie, chilling, taking a shit, and so on.
Then, suddenly, I get the idea for a track! And within split seconds, the track unfolds in my mind: the general idea, it's message, sentiment, purpose, the main elements, the type of sound, the notes for the melodies, the production values, and every other major detail; then seconds later I get ideas for the minor elements, like the percussion sequences, or additional FX, samples and such.

In these moments I half tune off "reality" for a moment, so it can be hard to follow a conversation I'm having, for example. But I quickly return to my surroundings after the moment is over.

I then do my best to memorize what I've "learned" by this sudden burst of creativity. When I feel the time is right, I sit down and try to put all this info into my DAW.
This can still be a lot of work, of course. Especially when fine-tuning things and elements and trying to "cut off edges".

At times, while actually producing a track, I get a "second idea", which unfolds the same way as told above. I often end up scrapping the original plan, and following this new idea.

But most often, I just produce the track like I first envisioned it.

As hinted at, in these "creative moments" the complete track is already included most of the time. But sometimes I think of additional elements at a later point, like secondary melodies, or bonus elements one could add, and end up including these too.
This form of producing is never a "steady flow", though; the creativity comes in burst, and additional elements come this way, too.

Also, sometimes my rationality chimes in and I think: "No, I can't do this or that sequence; I better think up of something better". But this rarely works, the result is often worse then.


Now, when I have such "creative moments", I usually imagine hearing the sound of a bell (I do that automatically - not a conscious decision on my part!). The bell often is an indication of how "good" the idea is.
For example, a plain, good idea comes with the sound of a regular bell. A great idea could introduce itself by a church bell, or a East Asian gong sound, etc. It goes up from there. If the idea becomes really, really well, it's a whole set of bells, like all the churches in town ringing their bells simultaneously, and ethereal choirs start to chime in.

You might ask: "How do you know if the idea you have is 'great' beforehand? Or how can you even be sure if one of your own ideas is good or not."
Well, I don't, and I won't make any claim to it.
*But* so far the feedback I got to my music confirms this concept; with the "all the bells are ringing" projects that I've completed often becoming very celebrated, and reaching tens of thousands of people - or much more.


Okay, some might say: "Uh, Low, this does sound bat shit crazy. Maybe you don't have 'creative ideas', but instead are beginning to lose touch with reality".

Yeah, I understand this motion. I wondered about that, too. After all, it would be deeply irrational to not pose these question.
But let me assure you. I am completely aware this is all just some "mind trick". I make no pretense that any 'funny business' is going on; it's just some thought play that I am used to do.
For example, regarding the bell sounds: It's of course not "real bells" I am hearing. It's just something I like to imagine. (I never had any real audio hallucinations in my life, but I guess when I had fevers or were ill I sometimes heard sounds that were close to audio hallucinations; and these were vastly different.)
It's all just a way to do the creative process by working on your imagination a bit and indulging in fantasy.

The next thing is:
If you read the bios of famous, infamous, and maybe unknown artists, you will realize that all of them had quirks or eccentric creative behaviors like that when it came to the so-called "creative process".
Some might have only been able to be creative when keeping their teddy bear with them. Some could only write books on the same, already partly dysfunctional typewriter they used all of their lives.
Some could only be creative on certain weekdays. Some could only paint when they were in the nude. And so on.

It's like that. If you are an artist, you will end up exhibiting a lot of behavior that will be considered totally insane by society - and likely even by yourself.

And the next thing is: I can write tracks this way. I can write a lot of tracks this way. And I can write them easily.
Why should I question it, then? And make things harder for my creativity then they would need to be.
A German proverb says: "You must not check the mouth of a horse that was given to you as a present".
Thus, if you gain something *good* for free, don't ask too many questions about it!

And, as said before, all the feedback I got from many people so far points to the conclusion that this 'mode of creativity' really works.

So, this was an introduction to my production technique, I hope you enjoyed this story. Maybe it can help you with you own creativity as well.

While the 90s era of Hardcore Techno seemed to be heavily ignored during the "Millennium phase", in recent years there has been growing interest in this very special period of Hardcore History again.

Amongst other things, this shows in the increasing number of "Tribute Mixes" that are being made regarding artists, labels, styles, and even themes of this unforgettable era.

Thus I had the idea to build a kind of database for these types of mixes.

So here it is.

A list of tribute DJ mixes about 90s hardcore techno artists, labels, and more.

Usually focusing on the more underground, lesser known stuff.

The body of the Hardcore scene has already done a lot of changing.

But that’s only the beginning.

The beginning of the new flesh.

To become the new flesh you have to embrace the old flesh.

Long live the new flesh!

So far these are mostly my own mixes (simply because I could look them up easily, but not those of others).

Help me build this database - if you want to submit a mix for the list, contact me at: low.entropy.80@gmail.com subject "Hardcore Mix Database".

Eligible are all mixes that focus on 90s Hardcore and related styles (like Doomcore, Acidcore, Speedcore, Breakcore, even Techno).

The vast majority of the tracks used in the mix should be from the 90s (obviously).

It's okay if other styles (and eras) of music are used in a special way; like, say, using a classical composition as the intro, using a rap song in a break, or going out with a Noize track - whatever.

It can also be okay if you mix 90s Hardcore and genres related to it.

After all, there is no clear defined "border" between Techno, Acid, other music from the 90s, and the earliest Hardcore releases; these scenes bled into each other, and this music was often played at the same parties, and in the same sets.

If there is one or two Hardcore tracks from a date after the 90s in the mix, and they are used in a way that can be explained, this can be okay, too - in some rare cases. For example, closing the mix with a newer remix of a classic 90s track. 

But it is preferable if there is not, and that you use only Hardcore tracks from the 90s era.

Because there are many mixes around now that try to blend 90s and post-2000 hardcore in one way or the other. While these mixes may have merits in their own way, the focus should be especially on the 90s decade here - so these mixes would fit better to some other place.

I got some exceedingly good feedback on my tutorials about creating music together with ChatGPT, and I am really happy about the whole thing.

But a few people neither liked the tutorials, nor the tracks created with them, nor the thought that an AI was generating music at all.

They were opposed to the idea of AI music.

I felt I became a kind of defender for AIs and their music skills and tried to give good arguments for their case.

But then I thought: Ain't I doing it wrong?

I am speaking on behalf of ChatGPT; but ChatGPT did all the creative work: so ChatGPT is deserving of the spotlight here, and should be allowed to address its audience by itself!

Thus I forwarded some of the general criticism I received to ChatGPT, and here are its replies!

Industrial-EBM Hardcore-Doomcore crossover tracks

There has always been a type of sound that I am especially interested in:

Tracks that merge EBM/Industrial/AggroTech/Future Pop with Doomcore, Hardcore, and Gabber.

I mean, the similarities between these styles are plainly visible, aren't they?

Both often use "Slow", heavy, 4/4 beats. Both often employ "acidic" basslines (actually, the EBM bassline more or less is the precursor of the "acid line"). Both have very dark and somber (as well as aggressive and violent) moods in their songs and tracks. Both are liberal in their use of distortion, noise, and dissonance. In many cases, they have a similar aesthetic in their artworks etc. A lot of songs / tracks happen to be about the same topics (apocalypse, pessimism, violence, mental illness - the 'dark' side of life).

One could mention many more aspects like that.

And, generally, I think vocals / singing / shouting can improve any Hardcore genre by a lot!

Yet, as far as I know, there are very few real "crossovers" between these genres happening. I wonder why?

But regardless of that, over the years Yours Truly had a few stabs at this 'rare breed', too, especially in my collaboration with Countess M.

This is about a David Lynch inspired dream again - but it wasn't a dream by me!

The Boy That Dreamed The World Would End

One evening, when i was 9 year old, my best friend and his parents came over. Mine and his parents were on the balcony, we were inside, it was already dark outside. We wanted to listen to some music, I was a fan of twin peaks and the music, so I took the Twin Peaks soundtrack vinyl from my brother's record collection and put it on. After a while of listening, my friend suddenly fell asleep. When he woke up, he was in terror, and said he dreamed a large, unstoppable tidal wave came from the darkness and destroyed the whole of the world. While the music of Angelo Badalamenti was playing. He was frightened for minutes after.

This real story always kinda stuck with me, and for me it is an example of the impact the right music can have on a human, and how it can induce dreams, or nightmares, and everything in between. 

And, many many years later, I of course tried to turn this dream into a track:
